UNDERSTANDING CALVINISM

The journey of understanding Calvinism in the Introduction to Calvinism course of Far Eastern Bible College (FEBC) has not only enriched my theological knowledge but also reshaped my spiritual life and daily walk with Christ. Coming from a general evangelical background, I was first introduced to the doctrines of grace through Bible study groups that emphasized God’s sovereignty. At first, I struggled with terms like election, predestination, and limited atonement. These ideas seemed to conflict with what I thought I knew about human free will and God’s love for all.

I vividly remember the first time I encountered these terms—through an article excerpt a friend sent me in 2021. At the time, I could not fully grasp them. But through prayer, Scripture reading, and the guidance of sound teachers at FEBC, I came to see that Calvinism does not diminish God’s love but magnifies it. The doctrines revealed to me a God who is not only sovereign but also graciously merciful, drawing sinners to Himself with irresistible grace.

Impact of John Calvin and
the Reformers

Studying the life and teachings of John Calvin and the Reformers profoundly impacted my spiritual journey. Their unwavering commitment to Scripture’s authority and God’s sovereignty challenged me to examine the foundation of my faith. Through Calvin’s Institutes and the Reformers’ writings, I saw the beauty of God’s grace in salvation and the serious call to live a holy, disciplined life. Their courage to stand for truth, even at great personal cost, revealed the value of doctrinal clarity and the necessity of sound theology in both church and personal life.

This growing appreciation for our Reformed heritage has deepened my love for the true faith of the Lord. I’ve learned that faithfulness is not merely about emotional conviction but about being rooted in God’s Word—rightly interpreted and lived out in daily obedience. The Reformers’ legacy encourages me to hold fast to the gospel, even in a world that constantly changes and compromises. Their example reminds me that standing firm in the faith honors Christ, glorifies God, and serves the Church with humility and reverence.

Spiritual Effects of Calvinism

One of Calvinism’s greatest spiritual effects on me has been a deeper assurance
of salvation. The doctrine of Total Depravity showed me that I could never earn salvation through my own righteousness.
Even my best efforts were tainted by sin
—a humbling yet freeing realization. Unconditional Election led me to rest in the truth that God chose me not based on foreseen merit but out of His loving will, inspiring greater awe and worship. Irresistible Grace reminded me that it was God’s Spirit, not my own decision, that changed my heart. And the Perseverance of the Saints gave me hope that no trial or failure could ultimately separate me from God’s love in Christ.

Contrary to critics’ claims, Calvinism does not lead to passivity but fuels active obedience. Believing that God has His elect scattered throughout the world, I am more committed to evangelism, trusting that He will use the preached Word to call His sheep. Understanding God’s sovereignty over every detail has also sustained me in suffering. Instead of questioning God’s love in trials, I now find comfort knowing that nothing comes to me apart from His fatherly hand. This truth has especially shaped my teaching ministry—I no longer teach from anxiety or pride but from a place of rest, trusting God to accomplish His purposes through His Word.

Furthermore, my view of sanctification has changed. Rather than chasing spiritual highs, I now see holiness as a lifelong journey of daily repentance and faith. I am more patient with my growth and more gracious toward others in theirs. Knowing that God is at work in His people and will complete His work has given me renewed joy and perseverance in ministry.

Lessons from Khoo and Tow

Jeffrey Khoo’s lectures taught me that Calvinism is not merely a theological system but a faithful summary of biblical truth that magnifies God’s sovereignty in salvation. His clear explanation of the Five Points of Calvinism—Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints—opened my eyes to the depth of God’s mercy and our security in Christ. I was particularly moved by his emphasis on grace as the sole cause of salvation, leaving no room for human boasting. This deepened my reverence for God’s holiness, humbled my heart, and assured me that salvation is truly of the Lord from beginning to end.

Reading The Story of My Bible-Presbyterian Faith by Timothy Tow was also deeply enriching. His personal narrative illuminated the unwavering commitment required to uphold doctrinal purity amid adversity. His reflections on confronting theological liberalism and maintaining a separatist stance resonated profoundly, highlighting the necessity of courage and conviction in spiritual leadership. This testimony deepened my appreciation for the Bible-Presbyterian Church’s historical foundations and inspired a renewed dedication to living out a principled, active faith.

The Legacy of John Calvin

John Calvin’s life has deeply impacted me by demonstrating the power of complete surrender to God’s will. His unwavering commitment to Scripture and tireless teaching amid persecution have encouraged me to stand firm in my faith, regardless of cost. Calvin’s disciplined, God-centered life reminds me that true service requires both humility and a mind anchored in truth. His legacy challenges me to live purposefully, steward my gifts for God’s glory, and exalt Christ in all things.

Calvin also taught me the value of theological clarity and sound doctrine in shaping both the Church and personal godliness. His dedication to reforming worship, defending God’s sovereignty, and discipling believers through teaching has inspired me to pursue deeper Scripture understanding. He sought no personal glory but labored quietly for the purity of the faith—a reminder that the Christian life is about truth and obedience, not popularity. His example encourages me to stand boldly for biblical convictions while living in humility, discipline, and devotion to God.

A Transformed Perspective

This Introduction to Calvinism course has imparted deep spiritual insights and practical convictions. Spiritually, it reinforced God’s absolute sovereignty in salvation and all of life, reminding me of my complete dependence on His grace rather than my own merit. It offered assurance through the doctrine of election and deepened my reverence for Scripture as the only rule of faith and practice. The course also emphasized that true Calvinism leads to holiness, humility, and a life devoted to glorifying God.

Practically, the course highlighted sound doctrine’s importance, showing how right theology shapes godly living and spiritual stability. It encouraged vigilance against errors like Arminianism and Romanism and affirmed the necessity of biblical church order through Presbyterian governance. Moreover, it challenged believers to be faithful witnesses in a compromising world, just as the Reformers stood firm. Finally, it impressed upon me the value of theological education—not just for pastors but for every Christian serious about growing in faith and service.

Calvinism has led me to a deeper appreciation of God’s sovereignty and grace. Spiritually, it has anchored my soul in Christ’s finished work. Practically, it has reoriented my life toward faithful service, patient endurance, and joyful worship. These doctrines are not mere intellectual ideas—they are life-giving truths that transform the Christian walk. My testimony is one of transformation, not by human wisdom but by the power of God’s Word rightly understood and applied. To God be all the glory.
