Turning Point in My Life
My name is Douglas Ho Hin Wing. In 1964, God called me to be a Christian. It was a very critical turning point of my life. I was told the gospel at the age of 14. By God’s grace, I came to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and believed that only His precious blood has fully satisfied God’s justice on my behalf. The knowledge of who God is began at an early age at Faith Methodist Church. It was there where I learned my first hymn “How Great Thou Art” and prayed the sinner’s prayer of repentance and consecration to the Lord Jesus Christ. However, in time my early convictions of faith faded away and I backslided. I lost interest in reading the Bible and my prayer life suffered. It was a matter of time before I went back to the world. I was still holding on to the old life, longing to live like the rest of the world when I ought to be living a life of faith in Jesus Christ.
Another turning point in my life came at the age of 30. By that time I was already married with two daughters. The Lord brought me back to His fold, in the Bible Church. I thank the Lord for His mercy and grace. It was in the mid-1980s when there was a series of sermons on the second coming of Christ at the Sunset Gospel Hour that brought revival to my spiritual life. I was consumed by hunger and thirst for God’s Word. Suddenly, I realised that life has but one value, to serve the Lord and to live my whole life for the Lord and for His glory.
I look forward to yet another turning point in my life, God willing to transfer my membership to True Life Bible-Presbyterian Church (TLBPC). The catechism classes have been a good reinforcement of basic Bible doctrines. I thank the Lord that both my wife and I could attend. I have also read the constitution of TLBPC, Article 4 with regard to “Doctrine” and Article 6 on “Principle and Practice of Biblical Separation”. I am fully aware of the areas of concern for every Christian and would abide by Ephesians 4:2-3, “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” I am also fully aware that the Lord provides spiritual leadership in the church and therefore as a member I would submit to the God-ordained authority of the pastor and leaders of TLBPC. Hebrews 13:17 says, “Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.” May the Lord give His blessings in my transfer of membership to TLBPC. His Unseen Hand Is Leading
I came to know and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ when I was in secondary school. It was through a Gospel meeting at Faith Methodist Church that I heard about the love of God and how He gave His only begotten Son even our Lord Jesus who is without sin to die for my sins. I learnt how He died on the cross, was buried and resurrected on the third day, and how we would see Him in heaven if we believe in Him. It was only through the shed blood of our Lord Jesus that we are able to be reconciled to God and how He was beaten, whipped, wore the crown of thorns and hung on the cross for sinners like me. I’m really grateful and thankful to God, our Father in heaven.
Thereafter, I backslided when I started working. I did things which the world did and did not worship the Lord on the Sabbath day. After I got married to my believing husband, we moved to a new estate in Clementi. We started thinking about going back to church. I told my husband that I hope this empty piece of land would be a church. Thank God Bible Church was built! We both were so happy and from then on, we returned to church with our two daughters. I thank God for His grace and mercy upon my family and me.
This was our turning point. We started serving as the Lord led us. I want to thank God for being my Good Shepherd. His unseen hand is always leading and guiding us. May we live with godly fear and contentment and serve Him faithfully all the days of our lives. Elizabeth Tan Mee Chin
Real Owner of My Life
I was born into a Christian family, and grew up as a pastor’s kid. It gave me a lot of opportunities to hear God’s Word. I don’t exactly remember when, but I came to know that I was in the presence of God, and wanted to become a composer who could write songs of praise for God’s glory.
However, God had other plans for me. Unexpectedly, I had to leave music due to family difficulties. Before I gave up my dream to be a music composer, my grandma left behind a debt, and my father was responsible to pay the debt. My mother willingly embraced the situation with prayer, but I couldn’t. This was because it took away my dream. Since that time, my rebellion against God began.
But God our Father was very patient with me. About ten or more years later, after leaving music, God called me back through my first daughter Jong Hwi. At that time, she was three years old and almost died due to an obstruction of her airway. I ran into the emergency room with her in my arms. Just then, God revealed to me who is the real owner of life. God controls life and death. He spoke to me through His words in Matthew 6:27, “Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?” Mark 8:35, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” It was my complete defeat, but a blessing.
Since that time, God has caused me to transfer fully the ownership of my life to Him. I started to agonize over the right way of my life to serve God. Most crucially, God required me to serve and teach students His Word in Africa, just the place where my husband is serving God as a professor now. So I am here and studying at FEBC to prepare for the work. I don’t know if God is going to send me to that place. It entirely depends on God’s will. However, I’m going if God requires me to go, because now I know for sure who the real owner of my life is. It is God who is my Lord, and I am His servant. Ra Chae Won
Thank God for Training Me
I attended church when I was very young. My father and grandfather are pastors. Because of this reason, I thought that I believed in Jesus Christ automatically. I went to church by habit before believing in Jesus as my Savior.
When I was 12 years old, I was with my grandparents in Seoul. At that time, my father was at FEBC and my mother was at Pohang as a professor. My mother came to Seoul every Friday to attend worship service on the Lord’s Day (15 hours’ journey). At that time, I had depression because my parents were living far away from me even though grandparents were taking care of me very carefully and nicely. At the same time I had questions: Who is God? Why did He make me? Why is He giving me such a bad situation? I couldn’t find answers to these questions by myself.
One day, I heard a message in which we must be born again to go to heaven. I realised that I couldn’t enter into heaven even though I was attending church but by believing in Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons
of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:12, 13). After that, thankfully I believed in Jesus as my Savior.
Now I am a student of FEBC. I try not to forget why I am here. I can thank God for training me, that I should not complain about bad things but believe that there is a purpose in God’s way. I try to live a diligent life, and try to know the Bible deeply in FEBC. In Korea, people around me are all going to church. I don’t know that they truly believe in Jesus, but I know the importance of spreading the gospel at evangelism time in FEBC. It is not easy but I want to tell others about the good news. I thank the Lord who made me to believe in Him. Angela Park
No More Doubts
I thank God I met Margaretha who introduced me to the Indonesian Bible Study in True Life Bible-Presbyterian Church. It was at the beginning of the year 2015 when I started to join the Bible Study.
I made use of my off-day, although it is only once a month, to come to the Bible Study. Praise the Lord, because of this Bible Study I learned much from the Word of God.
Here, in this Bible Study, the Lord answered all my doubts and uncertainties. The Bible, which was once only like other books of the world became a precious book for me. I see the richness of this book, and how God is faithful in keeping all His words and promises. I decided to believe and obey only everything that is found in the Bible, not the traditions. I decided also to believe and worship the living and true God, not the statues, the handiwork of man, which have mouths but cannot speak, eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear, hands but cannot work, and feet but cannot walk.
Some of the Bible verses that convicted me were: Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Philippians 2:10-11, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of
my hand.” 1 John 2:2, “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
In me now, there are no more doubts and uncertainty concerning my salvation, for Jesus is in my heart and now I am sure that I worship the living and true God (Ps 115).
I thank God for sisters Murni and Mega, and brother Shobastian, who have been faithful in teaching me the truth from the Word of God, even till now. I have truly understood, and am blessed in every Bible lesson that I receive. All praise and glory to the Lord! Ade Lina
More of God’s Word
Before I became a Christian, I was a freethinker. I was from a non-Christian family. My family life was fine, except I was like an aimless arrow.
I believed in Jesus Christ when I was two, my aunt preached the gospel to me and my mum. Gospel is about preaching God’s Word to others. Jesus Christ died on the cross to save us from sin. On the third day, He rose again.
After I believed in Christ, I knew where I was going as I trusted in God’s Word. I started attending Adults’ Fellowship, I started to learn more about God’s Word. I wanted to learn more about God’s Word each day.
In a Bible-Presbyterian Church, we believe in the Bible, we also learn how to trust in God, each and every day. As a Presbyterian Church, we are ruled by a
few selected Elders. We also get a chance
to learn Theology. The Westminster Confession is Calvinistic and Reformed. Calvin followed Paul. The Westminster doctrine is about the teaching of Paul in a covenant theology.
In conclusion, being a Christian is about believing in Jesus Christ, preaching the gospel, learning more of God’s Word every day. Amberlyn Tan
