WAS LOST BUT NOW FOUND

Found the Meaning of Life

To start off, I would like to share with you a brief background of myself. I am from a non-Christian family, and since young, I was never exposed to Christianity since I do not have many friends who are Christians. Coming from a Taoist family, I visited the temple for worship. But even so, I never understood the purpose and the meaning behind it, and I was just doing it to obey my parents.

Before coming to the Lord, I was just living for myself, indulging in worldly acts like drinking, telling lies, unhealthy relationships and many other things.

I came to know the Lord Jesus during my six-month school exchange program in Norway in August last year. I was allocated to stay with three other friends in the hostel, and one of my housemates, Cornelius, was a Christian. As housemates, we practically saw each other every single day, and I found his actions and way of thinking very different from everyone else. One day, the four of us were sharing about our religion since all of us came from different religious backgrounds. So, I first heard the gospel from Cornelius about how the Lord Jesus Christ came to die for our sins, and rose on the third day. He also told us about how God created Earth and also how Adam and his wife sinned. All these were very new to me, and I was curious to find out more. So at times, I would borrow his Bible to read. I remember the first book I read was 1 Corinthians.

September was the time where I ended my relationship with my boyfriend. Although I was glad that I am finally free from spiritual torture, I still felt lost and depressed, and on top of that, I was also having problems with my family. During this period, Cornelius saw that I was feeling down and offered me his Bible to read. Every day, I would read the Bible as I felt that reading the words of the Bible calms my heart and made my troubles go away. At that time, I found myself praying and questioning: “O Lord, how do I know if you’re true if you don’t appear before my eyes and I don’t hear you? If you’re truly there, give me a sign, that I can put my faith in you.” I did not get my answer the very next day, or even the next few days, and did not think too much about it after that. However, I was still reading the Bible every one or two days at that time.

When I came back from the exchange program in January, I found myself experiencing jet lag. I couldn’t sleep at night. Perhaps it was also because I couldn’t find peace in my heart. Every night I was reading the online NIV of the Bible in my smartphone (thank God for that) since I don’t own a Bible myself. Then there was this night where a particular verse struck me. It is from Matthew 7:7 which says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you”. That very night after reading the verse, I humbled myself before the Lord, and prayed very hard that He would come into my life to save me from my sins. The next morning, I texted Grace (one of the members in the church) and told her that I was seeking God. She then brought me to True Life BPC.

I have no idea when was the exact moment I truly believed in God, but after reading God’s words every day, attending Sunday service and catechism class, as well as fellowship meetings, I feel that I have found the meaning of life; “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7). I am thankful for the Lord’s grace and mercy every day, and for leading me by His loving hands to the path of righteousness.

My parents do not want me to get baptized. I was thus hesitant on baptism at first, as I did not wish to anger my parents. However as the days went by, I became very sure of my faith. I also want to serve the Lord and the church. I want to show my commitment and faith to the Lord. May my heart be filled with His Holy Spirit. I will continue to read God’s words every day and obey them so that I can be a fruitful Christian that bears good fruit.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph 2:8–9). Alissa Ong

Found the Answers I Needed

For most of my life, I was beset with worry. Before the age of 12, I had tuition for almost every school subject—worried that I would not do well for PSLE. After that hurdle was crossed, I worried that I would not do well enough during Secondary Two streaming to qualify for the “triple science” class. Thereafter, I was worried over my O-Level examinations, and then my A-Level, and the University exams. It should be apparent by now that much of my life was spent mugging and preparing for examinations. Worrying over exams became so habitual that until recent years, I had nightmares of being unprepared for an exam, especially during the November exam period.

While attending a Christian kindergarten as a child gave me some sense of being a Christian, in particular, acting out the nativity story during Christmas celebrations, and singing praises to God—“With Christ in the vessel, we can smile at the storm!”—youthful integration into a secular public school system gave way to skepticism, and academic pursuits became my priority in life. However, no matter how well I did
in school, I felt very inadequate and vulnerable in every area of my life. This gave rise to a growing sense of anger and frustration—like a monster that consumes me and doesn’t let go.

Thankfully, it was not long before Providence brought me to a young adults Bible Study class, which was conducted near my workplace during lunch time (with promises of good wanton mee for all participants!) We studied the Book of Matthew, and soon I found all the answers that I needed:

Don’t worry!—“Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? .... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” (Matt 6:26–34). This was like God’s personal message to me, and I have since been increasing in the knowledge of God, and hope that in future, I can bring up my children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Searched for God and Found Him

My name is Lim Ing Chu. I am 58 years old. I come from the Chinese stream and have a Buddhist background. I remember during my younger days I followed my mother to the temple to worship and offer food to the idols.

I am the elder son of the family and supposed to take over the worship. But due to some personal need I began to search for God and my salvation. After tertiary education and NS, I started attending a Charismatic church and even got help from their ministry of deliverance. But I got more confused after each session.

Praise and thanks be to God, my sister and in-law brought me to True Life B-P Church. I started to know that the Bible is the Word of God. My faith began to grow. Not only is my mental problem solved but also my spiritual. I got a good psychiatric doctor who was recommended by my in-law. For my spiritual life, I attend FEBC day and night classes for audit. Before becoming a Christian, life to me was just like a passer-by. I especially want to thank FEBC for giving me the opportunity to study God’s words and the doctrine. Now I can know God’s purpose and His guidance and direction for my life.

Now the burden is lifted away. I give all the praise and glory to my Saviour Jesus Christ. Lim Ing Chu
