Dear Brethren and Friends,
Welcome to the Filipino Bible Fellowship!
Christmas is just around the corner. Some of us are already thinking of things to send to our family and relatives in the Philippines. Meron akong narinig na kasabihan “Hindi Pasko kung walang Regalo!” (A Filipino proverb: No gift, No Christmas) In the context of the world, it becomes a burden to many, we have to earn and spend gifts for our loved ones. Even for Christians, the practice of “exchanging gifts” is commonly adapted in this season.
Biblically speaking Christmas is GIFT giving. God gave His Son to us! Jesus is the greatest gift! So if you are thinking of a gift to give to someone special in your life who is not yet a Christian, it is the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ! Of course it is not bad for any material thing to give but do not forget to give a gospel tract. The best is for you to personally share your salvation experience in Christ Jesus. If that special someone is in Singapore, you can invite him or her to our Christmas Gospel Meeting on December 23.
Fulfilling the “White Christmas” Dream
“Christmas is in the air” so they say! The dazzling lights, the red bells, the Christmas trees, the Santa Claus (or Satan’s Clown), and the brilliant stars are so prominently displayed around. And yes do not forget the snow and the snowflakes. Many have associated Christmas with winter snows as if Christmas is not Christmas without that white flakes of snow on top of the mistletoe!
I remember during my childhood days where we have to artificially make snow by melting many bars of “Perla” soap in a bucket of warm water and mix it to make a bubble bath to let it appear like snow! That’s how I grew up thinking and dreaming of a “White Christmas.” Oh how we became so Westernized in our view of Christmas. So much so that the very first time I experienced a snowfall in my life, I literally went out and felt as if my dream came true, I thought I experienced the true celebration of Christmas, a white Christmas!
But what if there is no snow as in the tropical countries such as the Philippines? Is white Christmas an impossibility? Actually, the Bible describes for us an opportunity to experience whiteness in life and more so you can have this Christmas. “Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:16–18).
If you have truly believed, thank the Lord! The above call was given to the disobedient people of Israel. The LORD chose them and took good care of them yet they rebelled against God. Earlier verses tell us this very sad scenario, “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward” (Isaiah 1:2–4).
We do not have to look back on the sins of the children of Israel to see the significance of the call for repentance. We can already see this around us and even among ourselves. This is the reason for the season! God the Father sent His son the Lord Jesus Christ to be our perfect representative on the cross. This is the reason why we have Christmas, to commemorate the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ. His very purpose of coming to earth is to take away the sins of the world (John 1:29). “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (John 3:16–17).
He came to cleanse us from all our sins that we may be saved from eternal death and to grant us life eternal in His kingdom in heaven. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1–2). What he needs is to confess Him as our Lord and Saviour. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed” (Romans 10:9–11).
The real white Christmas is to be saved and to be healed. “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21). “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
If you are still dreaming of a white Christmas, you must realize first the truth that we are all like very dirty rags (maruruming mga trapo!) and we are only worthy to be cast into the never ending torment in the Lake of Fire. You must sincerely repent of your sins and rebellion against God. Together with this is your prayer heartily asking God to be merciful to you a guilty sinner. You have to believe what He has done for you when He perfectly lived on this earth, satisfactorily dying for our sins on the cross and victoriously rising from the dead. Receive Jesus Christ as Lord of your life and let Him be the pilot and captain of your soul. As David in penitence cried in Psalm 51:4–7 “Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
White Christmas? Why not make your dream come true? Do not think of snow or “Perla” soap. You have just read the true meaning of this season and if you believe, He is able to make you whiter than snow. The cleansing blood of the Lamb of God is able to make our lives pure white! Don’t just dream, let your Christmas be white by repenting of your sins and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, the greatest Gift from heaven! – Bro Jose
