Dear Brethren and Friends,

Welcome to the Filipino Bible Fellowship!

Praise the Lord for the privilege and opportunity that FilBF has through the support of True Life Bible-Presbyterian Church to conduct Vacation Bible Schools (VBS) in different places in the Philippines. There are eleven (11) VBS stations this year and we expect in each station to gather an average of 75 children.

To some of us, we may wonder, what is VBS? When did it start since we cannot find in the Bible anything about VBS. There are various claims made as to the originator, and the earliest claim was in 1870’s in the Methodist Episcopal Church in America which began conducting summer Sunday schools. However, many have asserted the origin to be in 1894 through a Sunday School Teacher Mrs. D. T. Miles of Hopedale, Illinois. She felt she had so short a time with the children on Sunday mornings that it was not nearly enough to teach them all they needed to know, so she came up with the idea of organizing a daily school of teaching the Bible during the summer months. This first vacation Bible school met at a local public school, lasted for 4 weeks, and had 40 students. Nonetheless, the strongest claim of the forerunner of the present VBS was accorded to the works of Dr. Howard Lee Jones, pastor of Epiphany Baptist Church, New York City and Mrs. Eliza Hawes, the superintendent of the primary department of the Sunday school of the said church. In July 1898, they conducted a school from which the name Daily Vacation Bible School developed. On July 27 a few days after the opening of their school, a New York daily newspaper wrote: “The new pastor of the Baptist Church of the Epiphany, 64th Street and Madison Avenue, the Reverend Howard Lee Jones, has decided to commence a new work in the east side of his parish, which extends from the park to the East river. About ten days ago, a morning school was opened in a hall in East 71st Street between First and Second Avenues. The school is open daily from nine to twelve. Sight reading is taught and some simple calisthenics, but the principal occupation is the study of the Bible and the catechism. The interest in the new enterprise is growing rapidly. The first morning there were fifty-seven children.” The same activity was held the proceeding year and was often referred to as the first VBS probably due to the well-prepared programming of the activities.

This shows that VBS is done during school vacations of children. They are gathered and systematically taught a theme from the Bible. Through VBS, many children for the first time hear the good news of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Many born-again Christians today recall the seed of the gospel sown to them during VBS. When they grow older it became clearer to them to repent of their sins and to confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

This year, we conduct a VBS with Bro Carlo’s relatives and neighbors in Lapu-lapu City, Cebu. We pray many of us will desire to host a VBS in our own hometowns and bring the gospel to our children and even the whole village. The VBS will teach the children for three (3 days) every morning and the last day will be a time of some presentations from the children where parents are invited to watch. This is the best time also that we do the Gospel Rally where the Word of God can be shared with the parents and relatives. Start praying now!

Theme: To God Be the Glory!
Scripture Text: “Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.” Psalm 57:5
Theme Song: To God Be the Glory – RHC # 93

In Psalm 57 David describes his life in a dangerous situation. This could be the early part of his running away from King Saul. In 1 Samuel 22:5, the prophet Gad told him not to stay in the cave where he hid because Saul was hunting him. He left with his new band of followers into the forest of Hareth. In this Psalm, David expressed his trust and confidence in God as his refuge. He had faith in God who would save him from the lions with teeth as spears and arrows and tongues as sharp swords. Yet in verse 5, he exclaimed to God that His name be put on high, even higher than the heavens. He sought the glory and honour of God to reign over all the earth.

The world today is constantly attacking the teachings of the Bible, demoralizing many believers, especially children. It desires to influence the minds and hearts of the children so that they will not believe in God. Many who are deprived of the correct instructions from the Bible become victims of false teachings that undermine the nature of God. Evolution robs the glory of God in creation. Children are taught in public schools that they evolve from monkeys and apes reducing the Book of Genesis as a myth. Humanism removes the glory of Christ in salvation, teaching that man can have his own way of working towards heaven. Children are taught to believe in their own abilities rather than have faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary. Charismaticism steals the glory of God in holy living because they propagate a worldly lifestyle instead of a life patterned according to the Word of God. Children believe that as long as they are happy and healthy then they are blessed. This leads to the materialistic mentality in many churches today that takes away the glory of God in life after death. What is emphasized is the “here and now” and not the “here and after.” All they want to have are earthly things and not living forever with God in His kingdom. This leads also to minimizing the thought of the glory of God in heaven for they promote a heaven on earth mind-set. Children today want to live the easy-go-lucky kind of life promoted by false Christianity. May this VBS open the eyes, minds and hearts of Christians and especially children to the importance of living for the glory of God. Let the name of our Lord and our Saviour be glorified in all our lives.
