Dear Brethren and Friends,
Welcome to the Filipino Bible Fellowship!
It is always the burden of those who have found forgiveness of sins and salvation of souls in the Lord Jesus Christ to share these good news to their relatives and friends. Those who have tasted the goodness and lovingkindness of the Lord are eager to let their loved ones know of what they have in Christ Jesus. It may be difficult at the start but when there is sincere prayer for wisdom and opportunity to show from the Bible that faith in the living and true God, the Lord is faithful to grant the believer’s cry in His perfect time.
Moses’ intense desire for the people of Israel to constantly trust and obey the LORD was so heartfelt, “And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written” (Exodus 32:31–32). This was also the hearbeat of the Apostle Paul as he expressed in Romans 9:1–5, “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.” May this same passion be in each of our hearts for our families, friends and even to our unbelieving employers. Please share to us how God is working in your lives now as a Christian. Let us glorify our Saviour who loved us, lived perfectly, died on the cross and rose again for our salvation! – Bro Jose
A Report on a Bible Study with the Igot & Gabales Family (16 Feb 2018)
By Bro Jude Gabales
Early this year 2018 when a dozen of Bro. Carlo’s family members were baptized under the Church of Christ (Philippines), the FilBF proposed conducting a series of Bible studies in Cebu City, Philippines to teach God’s Word to our own families. As the Chinese New Year holiday was longer than expected, I went back home to my family. It was God’s providence to start the first of the planned topics for Bible study.
On 16 Feb 2018 at past 1pm, I met up with the family of Bro. Carlo at Lemco building conference room. I thank God there were over twenty who attended together with my wife, my daughter, my step-daughter, our family friend, and two infants. We gathered together first to introduce ourselves, then we commenced the lunch fellowship with the prayer of thanksgiving by Bro. Angelito Napoles, (Carlo’s son-in-law). It was a wonderful fellowship with the family. Afterwards, I started with the introduction on why we in the Filipino Bible Fellowship, a ministry of True Life Bible-Presbyterian Church, Singapore have been burdened to share God’s Word to them. The main aim is to know more of God and how we can have a deeper personal relationship with Him through the study of His Word. It was my burden to start the Bible study with the foundation of God’s Word through the study of the Book of Genesis.
Before the reading of God’s Word, we set off the pace with an opening prayer asking God for His wisdom to understand and accept His Holy Word. Then I read a short message in Cebuano prepared by Bro. Carlo to everyone who attended with a message from Ephesians 5:23, “…Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” After which, with the materials that I brought with me: 10 sets of the book “Fundamentals of the Christian Faith” by Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Khoo and the printed outline of our study being distributed to everyone, we started with the responsive reading of the whole Genesis chapter 1, “In the beginning God…” When the reading ended, we began with the topic on “Theology”, its definition in the eyes of a believer, and why there is a need to study it. It is not just for Bible scholars who want to become theologians, pastors, or preachers but it is for all Christians to draw closer to God as it is the foundation of being a Christian. It is our utmost priority to glorify God and nothing more but for us to honour Him. In our study of basic theology, it is in careful consideration that the students of the Bible, as a faithful follower of Christ, must believe the infallible, inerrant, and perfect 66 books of the Holy Bible, must apply the three rules of Calvin (humility, humility, and humility), and accept the fact that God exists. How do we know that God exists? It is through the study of God’s Word that we know and understand His existence progressively as depicted in the Bible.
We also tackled the question from WSC Q4, “What is God?” “God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.” Each of God’s characteristics and attributes were expounded with their corresponding Bible verses so that they may know that these truths come from God’s Word and not man’s word. With each explanation of God’s character, we learned that God is unfathomable with how Omnipresent, Omniscient, and Omnipotent He is. With each of His attributes, we learned that we humans were created in the same image and likeness as God’s communicable attributes. By this we knew that we are of spiritual likeness to God, not by how our physical selves look like. The importance of knowing who or what God is, is for us to understand how crucial it is to worship and praise God for all that He is: “I Am That I Am”; else it will be an idolatrous worship praying to a different god other than the God Jehovah in the Bible. We also discussed how there are three persons in the Godhead: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and that these three are One! Then we reviewed generally on Genesis chapter 1 of how God created the heavens and the earth and all creatures in six literal days for they know of God’s attributes of how powerful He really is that we cannot take up the word of evolutionists as they don’t believe in God and all of His power. The fool says that God does not exist (Psalm 14:1, 53:1). And lastly, we discussed how the Holy Bible has been perfectly preserved by God in all its infallibility, inerrancy, and perfectness which is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction of righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works (2 Tim 3:16–17). We were almost out of time from where we rented the room and took up 2 full hours straight in our study of God’s Word by which everyone was edified. We ended with a closing prayer thanking God for His mercy and love, and His guidance throughout the whole study.
I thank the Lord for how He has guided me throughout the whole session believing that I was not yet ready and worthy to conduct the Bible study but God helped and enabled me. It is with great privilege that God has used someone unworthy like me to preach and teach His children through the knowledge of His Word, and it was all for God’s glory and honour. It was a day full of thanksgiving as my family also gave good feedback aside from Bro. Carlo’s family who also discussed their own views and learning. I also would like to thank FilBF for providing the books used in the study of Christian Fundamentals and the gospel tracts. It was of great help. And I would also like to thank my wife who had been supportive of the Bible study when she asked her daughter, Katrinah, to attend as well as our family friend, Candy, to join us in the study. I pray for God’s leading to arrange for more Bible studies in the succeeding months to come. All for the glory of God alone. Amen.
